In an effort to combat one of the leading
causes of preventable blindness worldwide, Centre
for Sight will be actively involved in the official
World Glaucoma Day through Free Glaucoma Screening,
raising awareness and educational events with local
support groups on an open day at their Head
Quarter.
March 12th, will be
the second World Glaucoma Day (WGD) ever
held, a joint global initiative of the World
Glaucoma Association (WGA) and World Glaucoma
Patient Association (WGPA) who are dedicated to the
overall improvement of glaucoma science and care
through communications with international glaucoma
societies. Even Moorfields Eye Hospitals in England
will be carrying out glaucoma screening at the House
of Commons London, while the European Society will
do the same in Brussels at the European Parliament.
Known as “ the sneak thief of
sight” glaucoma is characterized by gradual loss of
vision due to high intra-ocular pressure killing the
optic nerve with permanent loss of vision
resulting in blindness. Early detection is the
key to treating and halting the effects of
Glaucoma. |
Because Glaucoma strikes so
silently and gradually but surely, it is absolutely
crucial to educate people about the value of early
detection. For a disease that causes permanent
blindness, it is truly unacceptable that so many
people remain unaware of its impact and
consequences. Visual disability has far reaching
implications, touching on all aspects of human
developments – social, economic and quality of life.
Every year many people and
NGO’s informed us that they would like to get
involved in this global medical event and for 2009
Centre for Sight actually organized it. Corneal &
Refractive Surgeon Dr. Choong Yean Yaw and his team
of eye surgeons will be offering Free Glaucoma
Screening and Educational Seminars at his head
quarter medical centre.
|
To emphasize the universal
importance of early detection, let us all join the
world in promoting glaucoma awareness as a cause of
preventable blindness. Ask yourself on World
Glaucoma Day: Who are at risk of Glaucoma?
Together we can make a
difference to the lives of the potentially blinding
people.
